In 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on older smartphones because of changes in operating system compatibility. This app will no longer work with Android smartphones running KitKat (version 4.4) or earlier as of January 1, 2025.
Users of these out-dated OS versions will therefore have to update their devices or risk losing WhatsApp access. Many older models no longer receive official updates from manufacturers, so upgrading them requires using dangerous do-it-yourself techniques that could void warranties or harm the phone, while some users might still be able to update their smartphones to a newer OS version.
Among the impacted Android models are:
Samsung: Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini, and Galaxy S3
Motorola: Razr HD, Moto E (2014), Moto G (1st Gen)
HTC: Desire 500, Desire 601, One X, One X+
LG: Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90, Optimus G
Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, and Xperia V from Sony

Starting on May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on iPhones running iOS versions lower than 15.1, in addition to Android smartphones.
Only iOS 12.5.7 may be upgraded on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.
These modifications, which impact both WhatsApp Business and the standard app, are a part of the platform’s endeavour to maintain the app’s functionality and security on contemporary smartphones.
