Steven Taylor, a mainstay at Newcastle United, faced Samuel Eto’o in the UEFA Cup round of 16, which was a challenging match for him. Taylor was under pressure to face the African Player of the Year, even though Newcastle had a 6-1 aggregate lead as the second leg neared its conclusion at the Estadi Municipal de Son Moi in Mallorca.
At just eighteen, Taylor became the youngest Newcastle debutant in European play during the 2000s when he replaced Andy O’Brien in the 81st minute. Luckily, Eto’o was unable to make him look foolish, as Alan Shearer added another goal to increase the Magpies’ lead.

Taylor tells FourFourTwo, “I didn’t want to be the academy kid who came in, played one game, and then was forgotten about.” “I always believed that when I got a chance, I’d be there to stay.”I thought, “Wow, this is the kind of player I want to compete against,” when I saw Samuel Eto’o. The task was fantastic. After we switched shirts, I still have his shirt. Mine? He most likely cleaned his windows with it.
Before the crucial 2006–07 season, when he made 44 appearances overall across all competitions, Taylor quickly created a name for himself in Newcastle’s first team. After making 268 appearances overall, he eventually played for 13 seasons in the senior squad before leaving in 2016.
Taylor gives a clear response when asked about his favourite highs and lows at the club.
