Court Upholds $5M Verdict Against Donald Trump

A jury verdict requiring President-elect Donald Trump to pay $5 million for sexually abusing and defaming author E. Jean Carroll was upheld by a federal appeals court on Monday.

Following a nine-day civil trial last year, a New York jury concluded that Carroll had been sexually assaulted by the former president in 1996 at a department store in Manhattan.

Trump was ordered to pay $3 million for defaming Carroll, a former Elle magazine columnist, and $2 million for sexual abuse.

On the grounds that two other women who claimed Trump had sexually assaulted them should not have been permitted to testify, Trump denied the accusations and appealed the decision.

The Second US Circuit Court of Appeals’ three-judge panel was in disagreement.

“We conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings,” they stated.

“Further, he has not carried his burden to show that any claimed error or combination of claimed errors affected his substantial rights as required to warrant a new trial.”

In another case she filed against Trump, a different jury gave Carroll $83 million. He has appealed that decision as well.

Following Trump’s victory in the November 5 presidential election, special counsel Jack Smith’s two federal cases against him have been dropped.

Under the Justice Department’s policy of not prosecuting a sitting president, Smith dropped the cases against Trump, who was accused of mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and trying to overturn the 2020 election results.

In May, Trump was found guilty on 34 counts in New York of fabricating financial records to conceal a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Despite delaying sentencing indefinitely, Judge Juan Merchan recently denied the president-elect’s request to have his conviction overturned.
