According to the Bureau of Animal Industry’s (BAI) most recent report, the number of barangays in the nation affected by African swine fever (ASF) decreased in January. Red zones, or barangays with active ASF cases, decreased from 225 barangays on December 27, 2024, to 133 barangays in 34 cities and municipalities as of January 10.
Eight regions—the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol, Central and Eastern Visayas, and Soccsksargen—have reported affected barangays. Midsayap and Pigkawayan in North Cotabato have the most red zones, with 18 barangays each; Kidapawan City has 15; Matalam has 13; and Rizal in Kalinga has 10.

Prior to this, the Department of Agriculture (DA) claimed that the government-controlled vaccination program using AVAC live vaccines and the strict establishment of border checkpoints in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces had lessened the impact of ASF on the nation’s hog industry. In order to stop the spread of ASF throughout the nation, the DA plans to administer 490,000 doses of ASF AVAC live vaccines to healthy and ASF-negative hogs.
