Apple Revives the Home Button with iPhone 16e

After eighteen years, Apple has finally refined the home button with the release of the new iPhone 16e. The 2022 iPhone SE, the final Apple product to retain the Touch ID button, is replaced by the cheapest new iPhone, completing the long-term decline of the device that began with the iPhone X in 2017.

The iPhone 16e, which retails for £599 (€709/$599/A$999), offers a contemporary iPhone experience that is comparable to that of the standard iPhone 15 and the most recent iPhone 16, but with some features cut to make it slightly less expensive. When it ships on February 28, it will significantly raise the price of Apple’s cheapest new iPhone, which was previously the £599 iPhone 14 and the £429 iPhone SE.

The old-school iPhone design, with its large forehead and chin, has been consigned to the past by the new iPhone, which features an aluminum frame, glass on the front and back, and a 15.4 cm (6.1 in) OLED screen. However, the 16e lacks the more recent pill-shaped dynamic island design found on the rest of the iPhone lineup and only comes in black or white. It also features the older, notch-style cutout at the top of the screen from the iPhone 14. The Face ID sensor in the notch takes the place of the Touch ID system for payment authentication and phone unlocking.

Apple’s latest A18 chip, which powers the company’s numerous AI tools, and the phone’s 128GB of storage come standard, bringing the least expensive iPhone up to speed with the rest of the lineup. It features emergency satellite messaging, USB-C charging, 5G powered by a new Apple modem for the first time, and an action button in place of the side mute switch.

However, the phone lacks the recently added camera control button on the side and only has one 48-megapixel camera on the back rather than the double or triple cameras found on other iPhones.

Apple will be hoping that this improved, less expensive model can regain some of the mid-range smartphone market and boost declining sales in nations like China, even though it is significantly more expensive than the previous iPhone SE. It might also help shift a larger portion of iPhone users to devices that can receive Apple intelligence features, on which the company has placed a significant wager to overtake competitors like Google’s Gemini on Pixel and Samsung devices.
